It’s Getting Closer…

So about the book.

I have been working on comments from my editor for the past two days. She is abut three-quarters of the way through with her review. As it stands, the book is about 325 pages and just over 98,000 words.

I’m not ready to make a full announcement yet until I see the rest of the comments. But the comments I have received so far are positive. Most of the changes are typos or grammar suggestions. I can handle those.

In the spirit of getting a little more information out there, I will give you two additional pieces of information.

The book will be split (as all good books) into three acts:

  • Part One - Innocence

  • Part Two - Corruption

  • Part Three - Reckoning

My last update listed the titles of the introduction and first four chapters comprising “Innocence”. The next seven chapters comprise “Corruption”:

  • Chapter Five - The Uninvited Guest (Marillion)

  • Chapter Six - We’re An American Band (Grand Funk)

  • Chapter Seven - Lovesong (The Cure)

  • Chapter Eight - Welcome to the Machine (Pink Floyd)

  • Chapter Nine - We Got Used to Us (Riverside)

  • Chapter Ten - The Other Side of Me (Fish)

  • Chapter Eleven - Same Old Lang Syne (Dan Fogelberg)

It will all make sense, I promise. And all of these songs, along with the ones from the last update and the nine from Part Three and the Epilogue will be posted to a Spotify playlist when I am closer to the true completion of this project.

And because it has been edited at this point, let me give you the opening three paragraphs of the book to whet your appetite:

Most nights, Betty Ellsworth found peace in visiting patients in their final days. Tonight was not one of those nights. Instead, she was giving up a night at home with her husband to visit Maggie Guthrie of all people, a woman who had warmed more bar stools than church pews in her life.

Maggie was in hospice for late stage breast cancer, and other women of her church had been to visit recently only to find Maggie unresponsive. They told Betty not to expect much because Maggie’s bad days were becoming more frequent.

Betty had hoped that today would be different, if for no other reason than it was February 29, 2020. Leap Day. A man-made extra day, a loophole to the reality of the current situation, where maybe the rules of decline don’t apply.

More to come………
